V.L. Seroshevskii about the epos of Yakuts

In 1880-1892 the Yakut area in a political exile was visited by the Polish writer and the ethnographer V. L. Seroshevsky. In 1896 he published the monograph "The Yakuts. Experience of ethnographic research" – an encyclopedic work on Yakut ethnography of the late XIX century. In this work he was one of the first, who paid attention to the Yakut heroic epos (olonkho), allocated it from other folklore genres, described the art of olonkhosuts (storytellers), assumed the Southern Siberian origin of the Yakut epos, noted its common cultural value. Today many provisions and conclusions of the ethnographer are used in the Yakut epic study.
