Regional Security Issues and the Image of Russia
in Sweden’s 2015 Military Doctrine
Saveljeva L.S.1
Abstract. The paper scrutinizes the main aspects of the contemporary Swedish security and defence policy presented in 2015 military doctrine, as well as the perceived image of Russia which emanates from it. The striking difference can be observed between the discourse of the doctrine and the actual political strategy pursued by Stockholm. Thus, despite a strongly negative image of Moscow presented in the document, the two countries seek cooperation within the framework of international organizations like the UN Security Council (UNSC), the Barents Euro-Arctic Council (BEAC) and the Council of the Baltic Sea States (CBSS).
Keywords: Sweden, security and defence policy, Russia, the Hultqvist doctrine, total defence, the Wallstrom doctrine, UN Security Council (UNSC).
