Abstract. The presented text is dedicated to the memory of the prominent Karelian scientist-historian V.G. Makurov, whose research circle included a wide range of issues, including the problems of war, power and society. The theme of the Great Patriotic War in Karelia especially stood out in his work. Being a native of the Arkhangelsk region, he was deeply immersed in the features of warfare in our republic. Thanks to his active archival research, valuable documents and materials published in various collections were introduced into scientific use. In recent years, he was engaged in the search and restoration of names of dead soldiers in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939-1940.
