Research on the effectiveness of Northern agriculture

at the end of the XVIII – beginning of the XX century

in the works of Petr P. Kotov

Abstract. The paper discusses the main works of P.P. Kotov on the study of the effectiveness of agriculture in the northern village. It is shown that he was the first to analyze the level of agriculture in the northern provinces and in a number of uyezds for more than a hundred years, for the first time studied the legislation regulating the submission of information on crops and grain harvests, and described the system of data collection for governor's reports and the procedure of the so-called trial threshing, including. The historian has thoroughly and convincingly proved the high degree of objectivity of the information that allows us to really assess the level of agriculture in the northern arable land from the end of the XVIII to the beginning of the XIX century.
