Study of the history of public plowing in an appanage village
of the European North of Russia in the works of P. P. Kotov
(To the 65-th anniversary of the scientist).
Evseev A.V.1
Abstract. The paper shows that P.P. Kotov, for the first time in Russian historiography, systematically analyzed the history of public plowing. In the works of the scientist, special attention is paid to the facts of very high yields on public plowing, which testified to the hidden reserves of northern arable land to increase the efficiency of agriculture. P.P. Kotov also described the appearance of new agricultural crops, tools and agricultural techniques on this plowing. He sees the negative side of the introduction of public plowing - in the reduction of high-quality arable land in the northern appanage village, the distraction of peasants during the harvest season from working on their allotments, and the creation of difficulties for the development of non-agricultural activities and seasonal work. And, finally, P.P. Kotov was the first to argue that the materials on public plowing prove a high degree of objectivity of the governor's reports on grain crops and harvests in the regions of Russia.
Keywords: European North of Russia, state peasants, public plowing, spare grain stores, grain yield.
