Fedchenko O.D.1

Abstract. The article examines the origin of the chronicle ethnonyms of the Russian North. Ancient sources mention the contacts of Novgorodians with the Finnish tribes of Yam, Sum, Korela, Murmans, Lop. On the basis of the studied material, it was concluded that the acquaintance with the northern territories and peoples was carried out by the Novgorodians through the Karelians. The origin of all studied ethnonyms is associated with the Karelian language. All tribal names have a uniform word-formation model. The etymology of ethnonyms reflects the geographical features of the territories where each ethnographic group of the population lived. The proposed article makes it possible to clarify the archaeological and historical aspects of the life of ancient people in the region.

Keywords: Sum, Yam, Korela, Murmans, Lop, Finno-Ugric.
